Definition of Ethnicity: Different in Everything

Definition of Ethnicity: Different in Everything

It's boring to talk about the diversity that Indonesia has. The diversity also seems to never run out to be told and admired. Nothing is the same in Indonesia, one might even say that. Everything is almost different.

Starting from religion or belief, language, customs, to ethnicity. The amount of diversity that is most abundant in Indonesia is the number of ethnic groups.

The definition of ethnicity is simply a certain group that has the same background. Furthermore, it is explained that the definition of ethnicity, or ethnic group is an association of people who have the same cultural background, language, habits, lifestyle, and physical characteristics. Each of them identify with each other.

The existence of a tribe will be recognized if it has received recognition from people outside the tribe itself. The process of creating a tribe is called ethnogenesis. The regulatory system adopted by most ethnic groups in Indonesia is a system based on the lineage of the father, mother, or even both.

Lineage System

The patrilineal lineage system is usually called patrilineal, as happened to the Batak tribe in North Sumatra. For a regulatory system that draws lineage from the mother or woman is called matrilineal, the tribe that adheres to this system is the Minang tribe, which is found in West Sumatra.

As for the regulatory system from both sides, it seems to be the system most widely adopted by the tribes in Indonesia, one of which is the Javanese.

The number of ethnic groups in Indonesia is very large. The total is hundreds of ethnic groups. These ethnic groups are spread throughout Indonesia. Each ethnic group offers some of its peculiarities, such as the exoticism possessed by the Indonesian ethnic groups in Eastern Indonesia.

Mixing of Ethnic Ethnicities

The diversity of ethnic groups in Indonesia is getting more complete because of the mixing of the original races and ethnicities of the Indonesian ethnic groups with various ethnic groups in other countries.

For example, mixing of indigenous Indonesians with Chinese ethnic groups, or mixing of indigenous Indonesians with European plains. The mixing of the two ethnic groups then gave rise to several new terms, such as the term “Indo people”.

The ethnic group that has the largest population in Indonesia is on the island of Java. Like the Javanese and Sundanese. The differences between ethnic groups in Indonesia actually strengthen the relationship between the people.
