Getting to Know the Unique Bugis Culture

Talking about the culture that exists in Indonesia, it will definitely never end because on every island in Indonesia there is a story about the culture of the area itself.

Call it the Bugis culture which is located in the province of South Sulawesi, as an example. This Bugis culture is a culture belonging to the Bugis-Makassar tribe.

The origin of the formation of this culture begins with the arrival of Malay tribes who migrated to the archipelago. The Bugis tribe has several kinds of culture that are very interesting for us to know.

Types of Bugis Culture

1. Village Forms

The form of settlements in the Bugis ethnic area is a combination of a number of families with the number of houses ranging from 10-200 houses. The location of the Bugis villages are generally lined up and facing south or west.

In making this house they use special ingredients which will later be installed on the pillars of the house in order to avoid danger. In addition to building houses, the Bugis also built mosques around the village. The house and mosque are built on pillars consisting of three parts.

Each of these pillars has a special function. Like rakaeng, the part of the house under the roof, serves as rice storage, then, awaso, the part under the stilt floor, is used to store agricultural tools and animal cages.

The hallmark of this Bugis house in front of the door of the house is always a small stage that serves as a waiting room for guests before being allowed into the house.

2. Kinship System

Marriage is one way to continue the lineage. Marriage can also strengthen the relationship between tribal families. According to the culture that exists in Bugis, the ideal marriage is a marriage that occurs when they get a mate that is still within the scope of their own family.

Before getting married there are conditions that must be fulfilled by the groom, namely the groom must be able to circle the kitchen seven times, and if he is able to fulfill his daily needs then he is allowed to get married.

3. Social System

  • The society in the Bugis tribe consists of 3 layers, namely:
  • Anakarung or Anakaraeng, this is the layer for the king.
  • To Maradeka, is a layer of free people.
  • Ata, for the slave layer.

Along with the development of time, the current division of the layers of society is no longer used.

4. Religion

The majority of the people in Bugis are Muslim and a small number are Catholic Christians. Islam entered the Bugis area around the 17th century, through Malay traders.

The teachings of Islam that are easily accepted by the local community make this religion a choice among other religions.

Before the arrival of Islam, the people here were followers of the sure galigo belief, which is a belief in a single god which they often call Patoto E.

In fact, until now, there are still Bugis people who believe in this sect, namely the people who live in Sidenereng Rappang Regency. .
